Portable appliance testing (PAT) is the term used to describe the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use. 

Landlords who provide electrical appliances must ensure those appliances are safe.  Apart from the Landlord's Common Law duty of care, the Landlord and Tenant act 1985 requires that the electrical equipment is safe at the start of every tenancy and maintained in a safe condition throughout the tenancy.   So maintaining a record of tests will ensure you have evidence of results from a recognised testing method that can be referred to if anything goes wrong.
